Southwest Fair Housing Council Applauds Court Decision Protecting Critical Fair Housing Grants

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TUCSON, AZ – March 31, 2025 – Southwest Fair Housing Council (SWFHC) applauds the recent federal court ruling that temporarily blocks efforts by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to terminate critical grants supporting fair housing organizations. This decision is a significant win for fair housing advocates nationwide, ensuring that vital programs combating housing discrimination can continue uninterrupted.

HUD and DOJ had sought to terminate funding under the Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP), which supports fair housing enforcement, education, and outreach. The recent court ruling halts these attempts, reaffirming the essential role of organizations like SWFHC in advocating for equal access to housing and addressing systemic housing discrimination.

"This court decision is a crucial victory, not just nationally, but right here in Arizona," stated Jay Young, Executive Director of SWFHC. "Our ability to serve our local communities, protect civil rights, and ensure fair housing opportunities for all Arizonans was directly at risk. Thanks to this ruling, we can continue fighting housing discrimination and supporting our neighbors who need it most."

The Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) grants allow SWFHC and similar organizations nationwide to investigate allegations of discrimination, provide fair housing education, and assist individuals facing housing injustices. Without these grants, thousands of Arizonans could have lost critical resources and support.

Tasha Lynch, Manager of Operations and Investigations at SWFHC, emphasized the impact this ruling has on local efforts, stating, "This decision directly affects our ability to protect residents throughout Arizona from unfair housing practices. It ensures that we continue to provide essential services and advocacy."

SWFHC remains committed to ensuring equal housing opportunities throughout Arizona, advocating for marginalized communities, and fighting against all forms of housing discrimination.

About Southwest Fair Housing Council (SWFHC): Southwest Fair Housing Council is committed to eliminating all forms of illegal housing discrimination.
